The most important aspect of "Jarhead" is, strangely, not the war or the actual events that take place in the desert - it's the way the soldiers react to what's going on around them with no fear yet no excitement, but a simple uncaring, unflinching attitude.
Emotional thrust may be lacking in certain situations, but that makes it more real - it becomes apparant that these soldiers care none for their own well-being and all think there is no end for the war in sight, and simply go about their duty because they have little else to do.
Mendes directs with his trademark flair, and the beautiful cinematography compliments the perfect performances from the whole cast and the awful images that are seen.
