A solid and engrossing Gulf war film. I especially enjoyed the characterisations, in particular Gyllenhaal's protagonist who was not only well-acted but also felt three dimensional and fully-formed.
Foxx, Sarsgaard and a host of unknowns also put in decent performances. One of the film's biggest strengths is the insular narrative; there are few sidesteps or subplots looking at the wider picture, instead Mendes focuses on this group of men in the here and now, and it pays off.
Plus Roger Deakins' cinematography is fantastic.
