Review of Jarhead (2005) by Steve G — 25 May 2013
What is jarhead? The title, it shows implicitly "an empty mind that needs to be filled with anything", in this case is it war or is it war? No matter how it will change to the better or to the worse, war is a symptom that needs to be cured so the disease doesn't spread.
Unfortunately our hero "Swoff" did choose to join the army and fill his head with unclear purposes, he joined it not by pleasure but by lack of options, and he did enjoy it, but what are the consequences? What did he hope to gain out of it? The black color at the opening of the movie mostly represents his vision of his life, as soon as he "spits" his first words in the movie, he concludes to what had become of him, but how did it happen that's what it's all about : War, what is it for apart from death, explosion, honor and victory ? With humor present in the perspective of action, and obsessions of the human kind, this movie is without a doubt one of the most significant adaption to the story, and its kind.
