Review of Japón (2003) by Thomas W — 22 Jun 2007
Reygadas' first feature and an intersting one at that. An urbanite bent on suicide makes his descent into a desolate, canyon-bottom village in Mexico's Hidalgo state where he plans to see out his final days.
His host is an elderly woman with whom he develops a close bond and ultimately propositions. An ambitious, minimalist, visceral film; Reygadas' boasts an impressive, often startling command of his landscape.
