Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Nick D — 24 Sep 2011
Didn't expect it this too hit quite so hard, or for Michael Fassbender to be outshone by Mia Wasikowska. The distance in the early scenes between the two of them had a perfect ache, but primarily I loved reading the dignity, fortitude and desire in that face of hers, just scrubbed down enough to pass for plain.
The adaptation loses its footing towards the end; the Bertha revelation just sits awkwardly, and the reconciliation doesn't have the emotional heft it should. But it's worth it for what's gone before.
