Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Emma M — 17 Dec 2012
Having never read the book, I walked into the cinema with the expectation of something very much along the lines of Austen's Emma, or perhaps Pride and Prejudice (the former of which I like, the latter, I don't). What I was treated to was a beautiful film that built a very real connection between the two leads.
It wasn't your usual period drama and I applaud it for that. Judi Dench was of course fantastic in her role, and some of her character's comments elicited a laugh in my local cinema. The ending was a little abrupt, and I overheard some older women behind me commenting that the book went a little further than the film chose to. That being said, it did feel a little long in places and I'm glad they didn't draw it out any further than that.
An engaging film. I must now seek out the book to play spot the difference.
