Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Sean S — 13 Aug 2013
It's easy to overlook yet another Victorian classic film adaptation; and no surprise, BBC Films was one of the studios on board with this retelling. But what stands out is the work of Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender.
The cast bring to life the characters which are often taken for granted in the made-for-TV fare that has previously weighed down adaptations of novels by the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen. However, it's easy to become disillusioned with this film if you haven't read the novel.
I won't lie and say I have, because I haven't, and I found myself sidetracked with the often dreary imagery and bland storytelling on offer here. There are moments of clarity, like Jane and Rochester's reunion at film's end (and that's mostly thanks to the cast), but the interim after the standout first half-hour was not a standout for me.
