Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Peter T — 12 Sep 2011
I must have missed something here. Critics seem to be raving about Mia Wasikowska's performance but to me she was as dull as proverbial ditch water. The film started very promisingly and I will admit to the tears falling at the part involving Helen but soon after that I found myself getting bored and a bit bewildered.
I could perceive no chemistry between Mr Rochester (I find no fault with Fassbender, he's magnificent as usual) and Jane so when their relationship takes off it seems to come out of nowhere. I admit to not having read the book but I have seen a different adaptation with Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton which moved me so much more.
I believed their relationship for a start. I'm afraid that this seemed to me to be a cast of fantastic actors doing their thing around a leading actress who is so in to her repressed and buttoned up role she comes off as an automaton.
3 stars for everyone else's performance though.
