Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by Danny D — 30 Jan 2012
Reaffirms why this is one of my least visited genres. The focus of this story is on the relationship between a governess (Mia Wasikowska) and her employer (Michael Fassbender). I seldom do period pieces, because there is always a disconnect for me, almost as an automatic reflex.
From the airy speech patterns to the poofy costumes, there isn't a genre that is more inaccessible for me. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with it, it just doesn't appeal to me because I can't get into it.
When Fassbender is put out, it is at least marginally interesting, but this was so slow moving, I spent the majority of the movie largely bored and fighting off bouts of nodding off, wishing the movie would get on with it.
Everything is so proper, which I could probably get past, but there is so much pensive hesitation, it's almost like this movie took a queue from Twilight, and that is something I cannot abide. Yes, I do realize there is an audience for this and I'm not one of them, but I couldn't help but see it for the melodramatic soap opera that it is.
Jane Eyre does feature some well thought out cinematography, and I did appreciate that, but this was so not for me, and I was bored out of my mind watching this.
