Review of Jane Eyre (1997) by Claire K — 04 Oct 2009
If you're looking for a faithful adaptation, look elsewhere. If you want to see the spirit and passion of the book encapsulated (or if you just want to be entertained for an hour and a half) then look no further.
Ciaran Hinds is the definitive Rochester in my mind. Others I have seen have been stifled. Samantha Morton's Jane is excellent and there is obvious rapport between the two actors.
It's a shame that this film didn't have an extended run time as the run up to the first tree scene seems a little hurried. It may have benefited from another 10-20 minutes of build up.
I love this version and could watch it over and over again.
