Review of James and the Giant Peach (1996) by Forever N Luv W — 09 Aug 2009
More stop-motion animation directed by Henry Selleck, three years after he made Nightmare Before Christmas, and thirteen years before Coraline. And given that you only have to see Monkeybone and Moongirl and you've got the complete set, this is a must-see if you love any of the above.
I don't remember much of the original book, though I'm sure I never imagined Joanna Lumley as Aunt Spiker or Susan Sarandon as the spider. The adapted Roald Dahl plot is simple (boys paren'ts killed by rhino,...as you do..., boy brought up by wicked aunts, aunts work him and starve him, boy escapes, makes friends, baddies get just desserts) but the pleasure is in the visuals, and the details, and in the cast who have an excellent time pretending to be ten foot insects.
