Review of James and the Giant Peach (1996) by Jordan P — 20 Apr 2011
Lots of nice re-imagining of the shark as a machine and so on, and they did away with the terrifying cloud people from the book, but I'm not sure everything quite clicks. My major quibble besides the unnecessary singing is that it is unbelievably creepy for an all-ages movie.
I bought it for my littlies, but after watching it on my own, I've opted to hide it in the back of the closet for 3 or 4 years until they're both old enough not to be given nightmares. I mean undead pirate skeletons? Glowing-eyed death-cloud rhinoceros monster?? Joanna Lumley??? This is not all-age friendly at all.
6 and up, I'd say.
