Review of Jagged Edge (1985) by Rihan P — 23 Dec 2007
One of my all time favorite movies, It's essentially a court room drama, set in 1980's San Francisco and was originally made for TV, but got a cinema release as it was just too good for telly!
Jeff Bridges is the poor boy who marries the rich girl and then gets accused of killing her to inherit all her money. Glenn Close is the lawyer defending him, their attraction to each other is immediate and neither does much good at resisting the unethical relationship that develops as the trial unfolds. The story then plays out with all the clues and red herrings and the twists and turns as to the questions: Did he kill his wife? If not him, who did, and why? As the audience you are essentially the jury and boy do you get a case unfold for you along the way! The one thing that really makes this film work is the consistently high quality performances from the whole cast, it's quite an ensemble piece really. It would make a good play!
Glenn Close is totally superb, two years prior to her big break in Fatal Attraction in 1987. Jeff Bridges, Peter Coyote and Robert Loggia are just fantastic, but it's Glenn's movie and she burns so bright and just runs away with it!
