Review of Jacqueline Hyde (2005) by James T — 17 Oct 2009
A silly, funny, soft porn with a horror theme thrown in. That just about sums up Jacqueline Hyde.
All right here's the plot: There's this rather common, not particularly attractive young woman called Jackie and she's looking for a boyfriend but with no success. That is until she inherits a large house from her late grandfather who was a famous illusionist. She finds out her grandfather wasn't just an illusionist but a mad scientist as well and he had invented a serum which allows you to change your appearance at will. Now Jackie can turn into whomever she wants and can have any man (or indeed woman) she wants.
As you would expect this ability soon becomes a curse as her new persona, Jacqueline, becomes more and more ferocious, leaping from sex to murder. Now she has to fight for her own existence otherwise Jacqueline will take over for good.
Of course there's plenty of cheese with its "be happy with who you are" moral but it's not too annoying as it's awash in boobs and a bit of gore. The better cheese comes in the form of the really low budget effects. My favourite part by far was the green and red glowing test tubes, they looked like something from a children's show like Are You Afraid of the Dark? or even better yet; Doctor Dreadful Food Lab, remember that? Fantastic stuff.
Anyway as said, I would consider this to be a funny soft porn more than anything else, there's not much in the way of full nudity but plenty of breasts. Except for Jacqueline herself, oddly you see very little nudity of her. There's even more of Jackie's assets shown than Jacqueline's.
Gore does come into it as well, not that much, but very funny when it does happen. Someone gets ripped apart, a woman gets "deflated", it's all very amusing.
So, breasts, comedy, funny deaths and glowing test tubes. I for one enjoyed this film.
