Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Josh B — 21 Dec 2008
The movie was a pretty unique "scary" type movie.
The movie doesn't rely too much on "jump" scare tactics. Instead it is more of a primal type fear, that might stick with you for a while. Basically the movie jumps around at 3 different times in Jacob's life. One in vietnam, one at home with his wife and kids (one of which is McCullough Culkin), and one in a time further ahead where he is seperated from his wife and living with a woman from his job at the post office. I can't say too much without giving too much away, but this is not your typical scary movie that relies on gross-out and jump tactics. It's more psychological, and for me there is this scene where he is taken on a stretcher through the hospital that was really unnerving for me and I think many movies have looked at that scene for inspiration since then. Anyways, a very unique "scary" movie, pretty cool, not super fast-paced and edge of your seat thrilling, but pretty unique.
