Review of Jacob's Ladder (1990) by Itamar K — 18 Mar 2011
I'm wondering if the "twist ending" would have been quite as obvious to me had I watched it twenty years ago, before twists like this were common enough. As it is, it's fairly easy to spot from miles away; that means that there's no need to judge the film by its twist, and, thankfully, allows us to watch it not as a mystery thriller but as a surreal psychological drama.
Even without the surprise effect Jacob's Ladder is an incredibly powerful movie, that sets the viewer into an uncomfortable atmosphere. The acting is good, even if I was skeptical about the casting of Tim Robbins in the lead at first.
A solid film that has aged better than most.
