Review of Jackie Brown (1997) by Jacob O — 27 Sep 2011
Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown is a rather brilliant adaption of Elmore Leonard's novel Rum Punch which is not only faithful (mostly) to the source material but to the nostalgic 70s blaxploitation influence it brings alive so well.
From the sublimely chosen music to the stylish title cards, not to mention that legendary 70s actor Pam Grier plays the titular role, the whole thing is a slice out of the period two decades preceding it.
Dialogue crackles, characters clash, music blares at you and atmosphere explodes. While it's not quite as substantial as Tarantino's earlier classics, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, it's certainly a step above the average crime drama.
