Review of Jackie Brown (1997) by Mike H — 29 Dec 2011
As a follow-up to Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown at first watch appears to be a partial misfire. On second watch, this is reaffirmed to a degree, but knowing what to expect is half the battle. Finally, at third watch, you're really watching it for the first time -- out of the long shadow of its more explosive and more mesmerizing predecessor.
What it has in common is that it's just as focused and almost as smart. At 2.5 hours, the film's movement is steady even if it is casual, and it remains tense or interesting the whole time -- thanks sometimes to the plot, and thanks sometimes to the cast.
The beauty of Jackie Brown is in the littler things, and although that's apparent at first watch, it isn't entirely appreciated until the third or fourth watch.
