Review of Jackie Brown (1997) by Aslyn E — 01 Apr 2014
Often overlooked in the discussions of Tarantino's best films and dare I say it, unfairly underrated. It probably didn't help that it was his follow up after the classic Pulp Fiction and being a crime story set in LA understandably fell short in comparison.
The truth is it still a very good crime film by anyone's standard and is Tarantino at his most refined. This is for the better, the slow pacing allows the main characters to have the spotlight which is great because they are each equally interesting and superbly acted.
While there's no marquee WTF scenes/dialogue exchanges (unlike pretty much all his other films and probably another reason it wasn't as lauded) That didn't bother me, asides from a few Tarantino signature shots it's pretty conventional for the 70's crime flicks it's in homage to.
Special mention to the soundtrack, since Kill Bill 1 I've been somewhat let down a bit in this department from QT and this was a nice reminder of his ear for the right song.
