Review of Jackie Brown (1997) by Dann M — 31 May 2013
Quentin Tarantino once again delivers a smart and stylish crime drama in Jackie Brown. Based on an Elmore Leonard novel, when an airline stewardess named Jackie Brown gets pinched by federal agents for smuggling, she cooks up an elaborate scheme to get free of both the feds and the crime boss she works for.
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton, and Bridget Fonda, the performances are especially good. While the dialog and the characters are well-written, the pacing is poor and makes the film feel monotonous at times.
The story also starts to run out of momentum in the last act. Tarantino tries some new and interesting things in Jackie Brown, but it's not his best effort.
