Review of Jackie (2016) by Matt D — 03 Dec 2016
If for no other reason see 'Jackie' for the truly amazing performance from Natalie Portman who absolutely owns every second of this film. Her portrayal of Jacqueline Kennedy is so uncanny and multifaceted that I am still in awe hours after finishing it for the first time.
The movie itself is a cold one that doesn't coddle the viewer into getting emotionally attached to the proceedings until a significantly deep point in the film. But the tone perfectly suits the subject matter and is probably the best singular character study of the year alongside 'Moonlight'. Comparing the two is a pointless effort beyond acknowledging the fact that they are indeed characters studies but in both cases you leave the film as if you've spent an intimate amount of time with the character and understand ever so slightly what it might be like to walk in their shoes.
As a Kennedy-phile I adore the myth-breaking that we become privy to in this story, but in a way - knowing that Jackie was personally responsible for some of that mythic Kennedy status- makes it all the more delicious.
