Review of Jackie (2016) by Peter F — 08 Dec 2016
Chilean director Pablo Larraín makes his English-language debut with Jackie, a fairly unconventional bio-pic that takes a candid look into a tumultuous time for one of America's most iconic first-ladies.
Taking a non-linear approach to the material, the film still has a seamless feel to it, and often has a great beauty to it. Larraín has shown in the past that he's skilled with political period pieces, and even if he's documenting an event from a country that's not his own, he brings a universal feel to it that may have been lost had an American director helmed it.
Natalie Portman (an actress that has actually been fairly absent from the spotlight the last few years) also gives an engaging portrayal of the title character here, and it may rank as her best performance.
A little slight around the edges perhaps, but a fine portrait of a very important woman.
