Review of Jackie (2016) by Kelsi S — 01 Jan 2017
Was interesting to see this story from Jackie's perspective. I've always seen this story from a more political perspective or as part of the conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination. This is the first time I've really seen it from a more human perspective.
How difficult it was for Jackie to live this experience in the public eye and deal with her grief and planning her husband funeral all while losing her home and everything that had been her and her husband's life work.
Her fears of how it would affect the legacy they had hoped to leave behind and their dreams of being a part of history. So definitely a unique interesting movie that makes you think and from that aspect definitely worth the watch.
That being said, the movie was a little slow moving for me. I was a little surprised as much as they focused on the procession that Jackie planned for the funeral and her and the children's involvement with that procession.
I was surprised that they left out one of the most iconic moments when John saluted his father. That image is one of the most identifiable moments of that procession that was oddly left out. It just an artistic choice that didn't make sense to me.
The performances were good, however Natalie Portman's accent kept taking me out of the film. She did a good job of sounding like her, but when using an actress as well known as her, you know her normal voice too well, so when she talks with a breathy accent like that it takes me out of the illusion and reminds me it is pretend.
I see Natalie Portman pretending to be Jackie rather than the character Jackie whose story I am watching.
