Review of Jackie (2016) by Tim O — 10 Mar 2017
The aesthetic composition of Jackie is outstanding. From Mica Levi's enthralling score, to the impressionistic cinematography and oneiric editing, every aspect seems to work as a means to achieving the feel of stream of consciousness that permeates the narrative.
Sadly, there is a clear disconnection between Larraín's style and screenwriter Noah Openheim's painful dialogue and ham-fisted symbolism. The screenplay also uses some conventional plot elements that feel out of place, and this totally brings down the film, in spite of Portman's committed and multi-layered performance.
