Review of Jackie (2016) by Nandan T — 12 Mar 2017
Wow! Everything about this movie feels and looks right. It focuses on the aftermath of the assassination of JFK and the repercussions on the life of Jacqueline Kennedy, her family and those around her.
It has a dream-like quality and the story unfolds in short, slightly disjointed scenes, each of which crackles with an unspoken tension that seldom reveals itself. When it does, and the carefully crafted image that the Kennedy family had constructed, slips away, we see the devastating effect those terrible events had on the individuals who were closest to the events.
Jackie herself comes over as a determined, if brittle woman caught at the centre of a whirlwind of events she is trying to control. Natalie Portman has never been better and her portrayal of this complex lady is extraordinary.
It is a truly captivating and electrifying performance and this is a superbly crafted piece of cinema.
