Review of Jackie (2016) by Steve G — 23 Dec 2016
Most of the buzz coming from this movie is for Natalie Portman's portrayal of Jackie Kennedy after her husband was assassinated, and rightfully so, but this is also just a well made movie. The supporting cast is great, the cinematography is outstanding, and the writing is both believable and smart.
I've never been a big fan of Pablo Larraín or his work, but this year with both this film and "Neruda" I'm beginning to enjoy and respect his filmmaking. It does feel a bit jumpy at times, but not to the point where it's too hard to follow.
It also drags a little somewhere in the middle but it soon picks its pace back up thereafter. The last half hour to forty-five minutes are the best of the whole movie. We get great scene after great scene that you would fill a montage with if you were making a case for award season.
Portman is better than ever as she nails Jackie Kennedy's mannerisms and voice, she alone is a reason to see this movie, but I'm sure that's not the only thing you'll enjoy.
