Review of Jackie (2016) by Bradley J — 17 Jan 2017
Natalie Portman is an actress who has recently gained momentum as a performer who demands recognition. Her work in Jackie is stupendous and transcends the thin shell of a film she is in. Jackie, the film, keeps the audience at a distance emotionally.
It feels cold and clinical and never allows the audience to really know the person on whom the film is based. While not quite a standard bio-pic it would've been nice to see more of events through Jackie's eyes prior to the assassination of JFK.
What was she like in large public situations? What was her relationship with her kids? We get to see clips of this, but they are all in relation to the surrounding situation instead of spanning her entire life.
While undoubtedly this moment portrayed was the most major life event this woman experienced, it doesn't allow the story to convey who Jackie really is and instead we have a respectful figure without much depth.
Portman, however, does stunning work with what she is given and truly deserves recognition here. Rating: 64.
