Review of Jackie (2016) by Dean J — 07 Feb 2017
Pablo Larrain's brooding biopic is a cold, inaccessible film concerned with one often overlooked aspect of John F. Kennedy's assassination - his wife's grief.
Natalie Portman gives a superb, impenetrable performance as the raspy First Lady at the film's heart, portraying her as a damaged, disparate enigma. Meanwhile, rehashed news footage and a staged in-movie interview lend the picture a semi-documentary feel, which is enhanced in terms of otherworldliness by a scathing, shrieking score.
The film is admirable in both its originality and its reluctance to stray away from its claustrophobic character focus, but ultimately we leave the theatre bemused and asking ourselves one question: what on earth was the point?
