Review of Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013) by Tyler R — 29 Sep 2014
Jackass is one of those weird, off the wall successes that spawned a slew of copy cats and sequels. So, here we are with Bad Grandpa. It's very Jackass in nature, but with a twist: It has a story. The film follows a grandfather as he transports his grandson cross country to hand the boy over to his father.
Yeah, you read that right. It's an actual plot synopsis. Unlike the previous films, this one has a structure. There are still plenty of fake outs, but they are strategically placed in a set order that progresses the plot.
Johnny Knoxville goes crazy as Irving Zisman, playing up the old perv and messing with everyone unfortunate enough to cross his path. Jackson Nicoll plays the straight man as the grandson, but goes overboard and becomes annoying by pushing his limits.
There are definitely some belly laughs to be had, but it has a slow start and some of the gags drag on a bit too long. Overall, though, kudos to the crew for trying something different.
