Review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Andrew W — 11 Oct 2013
Jack the Giant Killer (2013) directed by Bryan Singer.
All pay homage to Bryan Singer, hallowed director of The Usual Suspects, but...everyone is allowed a moment of total melt-down in their creative career, an experience that provokes that all-encompassing common language of disappointment and irritation; "Well, that sucks." And this did, enormously. A silly idea from start to finish, the fairy tale itself might last ten minutes if you were a slow reader or your dad so enjoyed doing the voices he took his time reading it out loud, smearing it out over 1 hour 40 minutes doesn't help it any.
It was only the promise of Bill Nighy from the credit screen at the beginning that kept my interest through the first forty minutes and then that too waned as I discovered his was just voicing over one of the giants. Silly, silly, silly. Ewan MacGregor and Ian McShane should not try to use this film when they pitch for other roles, but to their credit they do begin to look increasingly embarrassed as it progresses. One of our least enjoyable Friday Family Film Night choices.
Avoid it if you can.
