Review of Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Connor D — 19 Jan 2014
Undeveloped, cliché, suspenseful, good-looking, lacking.
A skeleton script doesn't hold up the occasionally gorgeous cinematography. The action is well done but the main character relationship has little substance and thus the core of the story is undeveloped. The external outweighs all things internal. The backstory of the two characters both have significant parent losses opening up a wave of Oedipus/Electra complex and other psyche explorations that are barely touched upon in conversation. The intimacy and overall story is decent for about 30 minutes but falters as the character development becomes brushed over. Without proper creative development the story does not stand taller than any other poor boy meets princess/rich woman story. Overall, this movie will not be a tall tale society will be telling their kids in the future.
Grade: 3.2/10.
