Review of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) by Ian G — 13 Jan 2017
The sequel that I am pretty sure no one was totally expecting but Tom Cruise was wanting in the hopes of carrying on another franchise to pair up with Mission Impossible with a ton of novels to spin off ideas from, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back has traded a lot of what was going for it which was sort of the few redeeming things in retrospect, the campy pulp predicting of how Reacher handles his victims of violence in his cases, subbing the chemistry with the much stronger Rosamund Pike for Colbie Smoulders who is essentially doing her Maria Hill character here with no major chemistry with Cruise, and the only person who you felt was in trouble was the maybe daughter for the titular character as he was trying to clear Colibe Shoulder from her accussers only to find out that was a hoax proving there was no real growth or involvement really for the film outside of just existing so why bother going for it.
Maybe if McQuarrie came back for it (i am assuming he is tied up prepping the next Mission installment) as opposed to the dull Ed Zwick may have had a different film. Not that I was expecting the second coming here but after comjnhg off the enjoyable Rogue Nation this was disappointing.
