Review of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) by The D — 21 Oct 2016
This one was more of a reach than the first and only got 3 Icees out of 5. Now 3 out of 5 isn't bad, it just isn't great. Before I go on, let me clarify that I have never read any of the books, so I don't get hung up on how 5'3" Tom Cruise shouldn't be playing the character. You know, how Jack is supposed to be built more like The Rock than Tommy C. I just watch the movie for the movie's sake, and I really enjoyed the first one. This one is ok, but Jack just isn't as menacing as he was in the original.
Cobie Smulders on the other hand, played her part perfectly. I would like to see her as more than a second-fiddle in an action movie. I think she showed she could carry the lead. Anyway, her and Tom did a good job, but to me the script just wasn't good enough. It didn't have enough of Jack being Jack. He softened in this movie, and I would have rather he didn't. Maybe down the road in a subsequent movie, but not in just the 2nd installment. For those of us who don't enjoy reading, we just learned about the character in the first movie and so this one went a bit of a different direction.
Now all that being said, there were good fight scenes and Tom did a great job with them. This movie just seemed to be missing something. Enjoyable, but not a "must see".
No scene after the credits.
