Review of Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007) by Dani M — 23 Aug 2009
An enjoyable Ottawa-filmed gorefest that makes the most of its limited budget, providing a good sense of humor, an fun protagonist with anger management issues, and the rare chance to see Robert Englund playing a nice guy - before a demon takes him over and causes him to start spewing blood and morph into a horrific rubber monster.
It gets off to a rather slow start, but builds up to a strong finale and the cheesy, old-fashioned gore and make-up effects come off as pretty refreshing in this age of CGI. Apparently, "Jack Brooks II" is currently in production and should be even more fun since it will have the luxury of cutting right to the chase; this often feels like an origin story that's warming up for bigger things since Jack Brooks doesn't actually do any monster slaying until the last act of the picture.
