Review of Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008) by Samir S — 14 Jul 2008
A winning script, efficient AR Rahman score and satisfying debut by lead Imran Khan (producer Aamir's nephew) make this the best Bollywood movie of the year so far. Its about the life and loves of a group of Bombay college-goers, but stays surprisingly clear of the cliches and cutesiness that mar films about this over-documented bunch of youngsters.
It helps that the supporting cast is good (particularly Ratna Pathak Shah as the hero's feisty activist mother and Ayaz Khan perfectly cast as the heroine's obnoxious fiance), but its the unusually sure-footed writing and directing from first-timer Tyrewala that makes the critical difference.
Kunal Kohli, watch and learn !
