Review of J. Edgar (2011) by Tom H — 19 Jul 2012
Clint Eastwood tackles another part of American history. A sign of a good biographical movie is when you forget that you are watching actors. This doesn't happen here. DiCaprio fails to convince along with a very awkward Armie Hammer, neither of whom receive a lot of help from the makeup department.
Faces are kept in the dark mostly (maybe this is the director's manifestation of how little is actually known about Hoover's private life), which only elevates the level of frustration you get from a lifeline flip-flopping all over the place.
From a director who has delivered excellent work, this one is best quickly forgotten.
