Psychological and personal. This movie is all about J. Edgar Hoover the person, not the chief of FBI. Dark, gloomy, enigmatic... a film like the person it depicts. DiCaprio is awesome at playing Hoover.
However, in my opinion, the movie toys too much with retrospectives, leaving the spectator lost at times...
