Review of I've Loved You So Long (2008) by Dulcius A — 08 Sep 2009
Overwritten French drama about a broken woman who returns to her life after a 15 year prison sentence. Some of the superb nuance of the story and performance is let down by an over eagerness in the writing to keep us guessing on the detail of what actually happened to her in her past.
The dramatic revelations were not required as the story was so utterly predictable that I had pretty much guessed every reveal before it happened. That's not to say that this film isn't compelling - but the writer should have trusted the bones of the idea (a woman coming to terms with what she did) and not tried to over dramatise it by withholding information from the viewer.
In the first 25 minutes for example, the writer is trying to play some sort of bizzare guessing game with the viewer, when he/she should have simply showed us Juliette's release from prison in the very first scene.
Not a bad film, but left me frustrated at the missed opportunity to have told a simple tale, straight and well.
