Review of It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012) by Cece R — 19 Jan 2015
A short film that will change the way you exist. No, I'm not being melodramatic, this film is beautiful and profound in a way you could not foresee. The simple animations are not only ridiculously appealing but the way they aid the story just proves the genius of Don Hertzfeldt.
It will make you question the way you feel about yourself and the world around you. This is the kind of film that makes you seriously question yourself in a 'What am I doing with my life?' kind of way. I'm not saying this film will make you self-hating, but you will wonder why you can't create something so beautiful and creative. This is the kind of movie you would want to make if you were the type of person who could create movies.
Is it sad? Sure, but it is also life-affirming, funny, original, moving, and the fact that all these emotions can be accurately portrayed by a stick figure demonstrate the skill and art this film required.
I highly recommend checking out the feature length film currently available on Netflix as well as other Hertzfeldt short films online.
