Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Gunter V — 19 Jul 2011
Three-and-a-half stars, but I rounded up. I found this unexpectedly moving. There's a monologue at the end that reminded me of a particular episode of My So Called Life, and maybe that's why it affected me.
Or maybe it was that it was a forward-looking ending, talking about what "will" or "might" happen, and I'm usually susceptible to that technique (for another, better example see the last few minutes of The 25th Hour).
Whatever the reason, I was inspired, even as I knew it was cheesy. Cheesy is okay! This is the mood I was in when I saw the movie. Galifianakis is actually really good, and not just in the typical wow-it's-so-surprising-that-a-comedian-can-have-raw-dramatic-talent way.
That's not surprising anymore. We all know that comedians are intense, etc., and in the hands of a good director, etc., etc. But Galifianakis actually shows some command of craft here, I think, and that was surprising.
It was like a savant performance. It lent credibility to the notion that Craig could be as good at art as he was on his first try.
