Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Ryan H — 01 Jul 2011
It's very OK. Not horrible, not great. OK. I was aggravated with them playing "Under Pressure" and most of the other songs they played. I heard this was supposed to be minus the cliches of mental hospital films.
Keir Gilchrist was very OK. Nothing really moved me about his performance. But Zach Galifianakis nails his performance. It was worth watching to see him pull such a great, mostly dramatic performance.
Even Emma Roberts puts on a solid performance. But the story goes just far enough to be safe, but at the same time I'm tired of hearing this kid whine. "I don't have a bad life. It's not like my mom didn't hug me enough.
" Yeah, we get it, you want to be original. I'm tired of hearing this kid talk about how everything in his life is mediocre, but he's stressed and no one actually understands him. Watching the trailer lets you know what's in the movie, nothing more, nothing less.
Watch it, save time, unless you want to enjoy Galifiankis' performance to the fullest. I really hope that Half Nelson has the beauty in it that I've heard and isn't as OK as this film.
