Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by John A — 15 Jul 2011
Bobby (Galifianakis) is the heart of the film, lending a real weight to the otherwise airy proceedings. I'm tempted to fault the film for its too-light treatment of mental illness, but as a first-person narrative of a sixteen year old who is most definitely not mentally ill and therefore stands outside those on the mental ward, the film works.
The lightness comes because the protagonist sees the world lightly, while Bobby stands as a dark beacon to the more sinister impulses of humanity.
