Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Jin M — 20 Jul 2011
Transpiring through the commonly perturbed mind of a contemporaneous teenager attempting to survive the unremitting bombardment of fulfilling parental expectations, materializing overly ambitious college aspirations and completing mountain-high piles of difficult assignments; "It`s Kind of a Funny Story" fine-tunes our scope of life- particularly the precollege youth`s scope- by enhancing the erstwhile blurred areas wherefrom to derive veritable happiness through the enlightening juxtaposition of true depression against mis-construed age-exclusive pressures.
It is precisely through observing a microcosmic society surpass and even thrive in their unique way despite of the obstacles that are far more challenging than those magnified by Craig (Keir Gilchrist)- the stressed teen who voluntarily joins a mental institution- that we can clearly understand the magnitude of certain issues when scaled with other far more troublesome ones.
Though this lesson may sound obvious, it is always a valuable reminder to appreciate the pros that we possess. Although set primarily in a mental hospital, "It`s Kind of a Funny Story" never shuts itself down into an abstruse corner of darkness and utter miscomprehension.
Quite on the contrary, the film successfully administers a dosage of comedy while maintaining the necessary mood to avoid anaesthetizing us from the corrosive thought of always being the bearer of the most tormenting conflicts.
Keir Gilchrist demonstrates a very convincing performance that transcends pity towards the naivete shown by his character but also a strong feeling of endearment as he learns how to live from a wide array of peculiar individuals.
The relationship that develops between Craig and Noelle (Emma Roberts) is one of the highlights of the film given the astonishing compatibility that was previously dubious. The moving, seriocomic acting witnessed by Zach Galifianakis is also one of the key components in this sweet-tasting antidote.
Granted it may react more effectively with the teen audience but the moral it instills through this insightful journey is just as entertaining and valuable since it fortifies some of the antibodies responsible for combatting life frustrations.
All in all, "It`s Kind of a Funny Story" is an endearingly entertaining placebo that will revive the pleasantly piquant taste of life.
