Review of It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) by Jacob W — 21 Jul 2013
I had my doubts about this movie. It got a pretty polarizing score at about half and half, it came from a great book, and I could already tell it went in a couple different direction than the book. Well, I take back all doubts because this movie was not only worthy of being an adaptation of a great book, but it also succeeded on its own merit.
It was surprisingly stylized with its approach to the story ark. The book went in chronological order and this movie skipped around quite a lot. It was all for the better though, because I really enjoyed it.
I do have a couple complaints. I do wish that they fleshed out Craig's character a little more. They did in the book, but in this they gave you pretty general details about his depression. I also think they could have done this with Noelle's too, but it wasn't needed as much. But I wish the scars on Noelle's face were a bit more noticeable. I didn't see them until the roof scene and the whole movie I was wondering where they were.
It's Kind of a Funny Story is a worthy adaptation and a movie that brings a lot to the table, but does a good job with all of it. The performances were great and some of the scenes were more than memorable (Under Pressure). I highly recommend it, with the caveat that you should also read the book.
