Review of It's Complicated (2009) by Jack W — 21 Nov 2010
I'm not totally sure how I feel about this film. At times it is funny and charming and you think it might elevate to that level that certain films reach. The ones that really take you on a journey.
But then there are times within this film that the narrative becomes complacent, boring and predictable. The same trite cliches are used and flimsy devices are used to make the film appeal to a broader audience.
The textbook example of this? When Martin calls his ex wife a ho. He's not of the generation that would know this word, would use this word and it's just out of place. These are the type of things that may widen the appeal for a broader audience but to the intelligent moviegoer it just smacks of sloppiness.
The one thing I really enjoyed though was the performances of all three of the main characters and especially the ride Alec Baldwin takes us on with his portrayal of the libidinous Jake. Just outstanding work.
