Review of It's Complicated (2009) by Keegan C — 01 Jul 2011
Meryl Streep truly is one of the best actresses of our time. You would think that would be most apparent in her most iconic movies and roles like Sophie's Choice, Out Of Africa, Doubt or The Devil Wears Prada, the list truly could go on and on.
For me however, it's most apparent in films like this one. Films that are otherwise rather mediocre, predictable and formulaic are where she really shines for me because she elevates them to what would otherwise be quite disappointing in the hands of lesser actors.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the film was bad, but it certainly could've been if Streep hadn't been on board. The rest of the cast also being quite capable also did their part. Steve Martin and John Krasinski in particular were quite charming.
I've never been much of an Alec Baldwin fan so I could really have done without him and I just could never rationalize why a smart, capable woman like Streep's character would fall for him again after he destroyed her once so that may also have affected my view of the movie.
They needed someone with a bit more charm like Richard Gere or Bruce Willis then it may have seemed more plausible.
