Review of It's Complicated (2009) by Nick M — 12 Nov 2011

It's Complicated is another movie by the great Nancy Meyers, she's done Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, & The Holiday. It's typical of Nancy Meyers to make a movie about a divorced couple getting back together & having a "fling" shall we say. I mean you've got something that's just the slightest bit cliched, but in a way it's kind of nice. It's Complicated stars Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, & Steve Martin. Meryl Streep plays Jane, a chef who's supposedly got some money, it's recognizable from seeing her giant house, to her wanting to add another section to it, & how she owns her own bakery.

Now, Jane is previously divorced to Alec Baldwin's character, Jake. Jake is married to somewhat younger & bossier, this would be Agness who is played by Lake Bell. As we can tell somewhere in the beginning that Jake isn't happy with his marriage, Agness is bossy plus her, I would say somewhere between 5-8 year old son is kind of an ass too, those two added together equal hell. Jane & Jake have, in the past, had three children in the past, & now it's time for the youngest son's (who is played by Weed's Hunter Parrish) graduation, & of course they both have to go to it. Ironically, they both choose the same hotel. The night after the graduation they both are at the bar (again, ironic) & so they decide to eat together & have a few drinks, which, of course, leads to a few more drinks until they're drunk out of their thick skulls & are sleeping together.

The thing that's so great about It's Complicated is that, yes it's one of those romantic comedies that are maybe just the slightest bit cliched, but it's got something about it that shines or perhaps sparks. Plus the performances from Streep & Baldwin are superb. The finale of the film may be a bit of a downer, but it kind of sets off the movie in a good way.
