Review of It's Complicated (2009) by Stacy M — 15 Jan 2012
I loved this film! It was a romantic comedy for adults, yet seemed to come from a more realistic place. Who hasn't at one point in time thought What if? when thinking about a previous relationship. This film showed a character who lived that thought and showed us that love and life is more complicated than the younger romantic comedies and Disney princess films show.
I also really enjoy this film for its look at development in middle adulthood. One of my favorite scenes involves Alec Baldwin's character questioning his current marriage as he is having to redo all of the things he already did in his 20s. Not often do you see this perspective in films. Instead, you just see the older man marrying the younger woman without discussing the conditions that often come from this type of relationship.
Is the plot of this film complicated as the title suggests? Well no. Instead, the title is focusing on the emotional side of life as things are often complicated and messy. This messiness, however, it what makes life wonderful and fun.
