Review of It's Complicated (2009) by Jeffrey L — 05 Jan 2013
Meryl Streep is back on the money with another fun comedy with It's Complicated, a longish yet enjoyable romantic comedy for the older generation and features a great supporting cast, particularly Steve Martin sporting a man with a hunky reputation. An enjoyable film, throughout with plenty of hilarious moments to last nearly the whole way through, most viewers (especially fans of the leads) should find this to be quite a viewing pleasure.
As Streep can handle the most dramatic of roles given to her (Sophie's Choice and Doubt, to name a couple), she demonstrates again how a "fun" role, she can pull off just as easily. Martin also shows us his fun side again as her love interest (or at least one of them) and skillfully shows how romantic he can be, as well.
As a whole, all should have a great time when they view this and despite all the complicated scenarios, there is enough humor and hilarious scenarios to make it a viewing pleasure.
A great showcase for good taste in cinematography, set design and gourmet food is another fine asset to this film. As Streep plays a restaurant owner and Martin an architect, one can only imagine how snazzy and appealing the film will be, despite its promising cast.
Though Streep and Martin are appealing (or at least as appealing as they can be, given their "over the hill" age status), Baldwin comes off as unbelievably annoying and does not quite fit in among the others (or could this be part of the plot?). As his character obviously comes off as a scumbag who never did anyone any good, one may wonder why Streep is wasting her time on him when she could have hunky Martin. This does give the film some additional spice and twist the plot in ways one may not expect them to go. All in all, quite a fun time.
