Review of It's Alive (1974) by Augusto A — 16 Dec 2008
Stuff like the constant zooming in and out, the "baby-vision" moments and some of the acting annoyed the hell out of me, but the movie is certainly heavy on atmosphere. Such a suspenseful, oppressive mood, made even more effective by Bernard Herrmann's score.
It also has a subtle sense of humor. It's just so fucking weird. I really like the slow build-up to the birth of the baby, how it isn't kept a secret and we get to see the influence it has on the family, the police force and the community, and how seriously the filmmakers and the actors take everything.
Even though the effects are a little cheap, they know how to shoot the baby to get the best out of it. It's far from a masterpiece, but I've seen a lot worse.
